Redact PDF

Mark areas or matching text for redaction, then rebuild every page as a flattened image in a new PDF. Review placement carefully: the exported file loses selectable text and interactive features.

How it works

  1. 01

    Inspect every page

Open a PDF and review the pages containing information to remove.

  2. 02

    Mark matches and missed areas

Draw boxes or search for comma-separated terms. Inspect every match and all pages for missed information.

  3. 03

    Verify the rebuilt document

Download the rebuilt PDF. Check visible coverage and review the result before sharing. Keep the original separately.

Black out sensitive text and areas for good

Review a repeated account reference

A test report contains an invented account number in a header and a table. Search for the number, inspect each match and draw extra boxes where necessary. Export the complete rebuilt document.

✓ Verify both occurrences, inspect nearby characters and confirm source attachments and metadata are absent in output checks.

Options after selecting a file

Find terms

Enter comma-separated terms and choose Mark all matches to create boxes from the PDF text layer.

Search can miss scans, fragmented text or spelling variants. Review every match and unmarked page.

Area boxes

Draw over the visible information to cover, then inspect each box edge.

A box that misses a character leaves it visible. All pages are rasterized, so even unmarked pages lose selectable text and interactive features.

Frequently asked questions

The details, when you need them.

Will the result keep searchable text?

No. All pages are rebuilt as flattened images. OCR could later recognize visible remaining text, but it does not restore the source text layer.

Does the revised exporter copy original PDF streams?

It creates a fresh PDF from rendered page images rather than copying source objects. Recovered-content tests and release verification are still required; review every marked and unmarked area before sharing.

A fresh document rather than a saved source context

The revised export renders every page, paints marked areas and embeds lossless PNG page images in a newly created PDF. Original PDF objects are not copied. This avoids the audited retained-source-stream save path, but release verification remains required.

Check the coverage of every mark

Search depends on the PDF text layer and can miss scanned text, alternative spellings or unexpected reading order. Draw boxes for areas that search cannot identify. Inspect neighboring characters and repeat occurrences before sharing.

Rasterized output

Every page becomes a rendered image, including unmarked pages. Selectable text, links, form fields, annotations, attachments and original metadata are not retained. Rasterization has finite resolution and can increase file size.

Coverage depends on the marks

A clean rebuild does not identify unmarked secrets. Search is not a substitute for reviewing the complete document, especially scans. Release verification is pending.

Search misses a visible name

The page may be a scan or contain fragmented text-layer entries. Draw a box over the area, then inspect the entire document for other occurrences.
