How it works
Choose a document with navigation bookmarks
Open a PDF with bookmarks.
Export the indented outline
Choose Export bookmarks.
Resolve question-mark destinations
Download the text list and review the destinations.
Save a nested bookmark list with destination page numbers
Preserve chapter labels before replacing an outline
A report has nested chapter bookmarks that must be recorded before its navigation is simplified. Export the text outline first. Keep the indentation when reviewing chapter relationships. Check entries marked ? in the source reader because their destinations were not resolved to local pages.
✓ Compare the text indentation to the reader outline. Spot-check destination numbers and treat question marks as unresolved, not missing page content.Frequently asked questions
The details, when you need them.
Why does an entry show a question mark?
Its destination could not be resolved to a page in the current document.
Does this export a printed contents page?
No. It exports the PDF’s navigation bookmarks.
Reuse an existing document outline
An exported list can help plan a new document, audit navigation or preserve chapter names before replacing bookmarks. Each line contains a page number and title. Indentation represents nested items, so the relationship between main sections and subsections remains visible.
Some destinations are not local pages
A bookmark may point to an external action or a destination that cannot be resolved. Those entries receive a question mark in place of the page number. Exporting an outline does not extract the bookmarked page contents. Use Extract pages for that task.

Printed contents are not navigation bookmarks
The export reads navigation bookmarks, not a printed contents page. Unresolved destinations show a question mark.
No bookmarks are found despite a contents page
Printed text is not a navigation outline. Use PDF to text to extract the visible contents or create bookmarks separately.
