Numbering is useful for handouts, reports and assembled document packs. Decide whether a cover should be included and use the Skip the first page option accordingly. A starting number can continue a sequence from an earlier section. Preview the finished PDF because visible page numbers and a viewer’s page positions are separate concepts.
Place numbers away from existing footnotes, signatures and printer trim areas. Mixed page sizes can affect how a consistent position looks across the document. Adding page numbers creates new content; it does not remove numbers already printed on the source pages. Keep an unnumbered copy if the document may be assembled differently later.
Existing printed numbers remain. The tool does not rewrite bookmarks or PDF page labels.
