How it works

  1. 01

    Select the document

Select a PDF that can be opened.

  2. 02

    Set the password and permissions

Enter and repeat a password of 1 to 32 printable ASCII characters, then choose the reader permission settings.

  3. 03

    Test password access

Create the protected copy and test opening it in a PDF reader.

Add a password so only the right people can open the file

Add basic access friction to a handout

A non-sensitive handout needs a basic opening password. Review whether legacy protection meets the receiving workflow before using it. Enter and repeat an opening password. Set reader permissions for the intended recipients and avoid this legacy method if modern encryption is required.

✓ Close and reopen the download, test the correct and an incorrect password, and inspect all pages.

Make it work for your document

Options after selecting a file

Password confirmation

Enter the same opening password in both fields. Use 1 to 32 printable ASCII characters; longer passwords and non-ASCII characters are rejected.

Keep the password separately; this tool does not supply recovery. Its legacy encryption is unsuitable when modern protection is required.

Reader permissions

Allow or restrict printing, copying and changing through the three checkboxes.

These flags depend on reader enforcement and are not a reliable barrier against capable software.

Frequently asked questions

The details, when you need them.

Does this use modern AES-256 encryption?

No. The current browser implementation uses legacy library encryption. Use a dedicated tool when modern encryption is required.

Will text and forms remain interactive?

No. This version stores the pages as images in the protected file.

Basic protection with important limits

This implementation uses the bundled library’s legacy PDF encryption and rebuilds the pages as images. It should not be presented as modern, high-assurance encryption. For confidential material that requires current encryption standards, use a dedicated PDF security tool with an appropriate encryption mode. Do not rely on reader permission flags as strong access control.

Check usability after protecting

The image-based copy loses original text selection, links and form controls. Choose a password you can retain and test the result before sharing it. Keep an unprotected source in a suitable private location if you will need to edit the content. Reprocessing an already protected input may require unlocking it first.

Legacy encryption and reader-dependent permissions

Uses basic legacy encryption, not modern high-assurance encryption. Reader permissions can be ignored by software; text and interactive features are lost.

A receiving viewer ignores a permission restriction

PDF permissions depend on the reader enforcing them. Do not treat copy or print restrictions as reliable protection. Use a reviewed modern security workflow when required.
